2019年に開館90周年を迎えた三井本館は、日本近代建築を代表する重要文化財であり、現代の都市においてはごくあたりまえの存在となった「複合オフィスビル」の先駆けともいえる建築物です。
合名玄関と呼ばれるオフィスフロアのエントランスと、隣接する日本橋三井タワーのアトリウムで、2019年6月8日から7月21日に開催された本展覧会は、その歴史を振り返り、建物としての魅力を現代の視点で切り取るものです。
展覧会は、写真家・ホンマタカシ氏の撮影・監修による写真展示企画を主体に構成、ホンマ氏が長年取り組んでいる「カメラオブスキュラ」を用いた写真を含む三井本館の撮り下ろし写真が特大サイズで展示されるほか、建設当時の様子を収めた貴重なアーカイブもホンマ氏の手で再撮影・編集され、空間インスタレーションされました。

外観への装飾
開館90周年を祝い、三井本館そのものにも装飾を施しました。大通り側のファサードに掲出した、構造体むき出しの建設中の作業員集合写真や開館当時の往来の風景写真は、日本橋の街行く人々に、90年前の三井本館と人・街との関わりを感じて頂きました。建物の周囲は、色とりどりの花により装飾され、夜は古典主義建築の特徴的なオーダーの連続、水平なコーニスを浮かび上がらせる特別なライトアップを行ないました。三井本館が、色鮮やかに浮かび上がるシーンと、街並に連続して馴染むシーンとが時間ごとに繰り返しました。

The year 2019 marked the 90thanniversary since the opening of the Mitsui Main Building, which is both an important cultural property representative of modern Japanese architecture and a forerunning design of multi-office buildings that have become ordinary elements of today’s cityscape.
This exhibition, held from June 8th to July 21 in 2019 at the building’s Gomei Entrance and the adjacent Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower’s Atrium space, reflected on its history and presented its charms as a building from a contemporary perspective.
The exhibition centered around the photographs taken and selected by the photographer Takashi Homma—large prints of the photographs of the Mitsui Main Building taken with the camera obscura technique Homma has been working with over the years, as well as archive photographs of the time of the building’s construction reproduced and edited by the photographer himself.

Decorating the Façade
We also decorated the exterior of the building in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Mitsui Main Building. Hanged over the façade along the main street, the group photograph of workers standing on the naked framework of the building under construction and the photograph of the street scenery at the time of its opening presented a look into the relationship between the Mitsui Main Building, the people and the district of 90 years ago.
A decoration of colorful flowers surrounded the building, and at night, a special illumination highlighted the building’s long sequence of columns as well as its horizontal cornices typical of classical architecture. The vivid colors of the projected light and the light that blends into the urban landscape continued to alternate based on the time of the night. It was a reinterpretation of the illumination of the Mitsui Main Building, which has remained unchanged throughout history regardless of the changes with the people and the city.
